The square in front of the town hall was created around 1200 and served as a place of execution in the Middle Ages. A paving stone marked with a simple cross indicates the former location of the gallows. The artisans' revolt that broke out in 1405 ended in 1408 with the execution of 13 of the 100 rebels sentenced to death on the orders of King Wenceslas IV.

A paving stone with a Maltese cross carved into it in the paved path that divides the square indicates the place of execution. The market fountain was built between 1572 and 1575 by Wenzel Röhrscheidt the Elder, demolished in 1855 and rebuilt in 1985. The copy of "Knight Dutschmann" by the Silesian-Saxon sculptor family Walther crowns the fountain. The paving marking on the north-east side commemorates the town guard that was demolished in 1893.

The weekly markets have been held on the square since 1990.

Nice old houses around the market place, but the town hall is the eye catcher.

The city tour is very interesting and you learn a lot of interesting facts about Bautzen's over 1000-year history.

With its modest size of 50 x 65 meters, the Main Market Square was and remains the heart, the "ballroom" of the city. When the town hall was built around 1213, the present Main Market Square must have already existed, making it one of Bautzen's oldest squares. The market square is a space where one arrives. For centuries, the Main Market Square was a destination for trade routes from Bohemia and Franconia. It was also the scene of the city's market activity, with the annual fairs as their highlight. But pillorying and public executions on the gallows also drew people to the market square. Theater performances were often held in front of the town hall.
The charm of market days has been preserved to this day, and a Saturday morning market visit is a must for a successful weekend. The spatial effect of the Main Market Square is, of course, not achieved by the square itself.

It is the houses that stand "around" it that form, so to speak, the "walls of the festival hall," with the town hall and the Gewandhaus as the highlight. They all have their own history, and some have even made city history.
The first market fountain was built between 1572 and 1575 under Wenzel Röhrscheidt the Elder. The sandstone sculpture of "Knight Dutschmann" was a work by Christoph Walter II from 1576 and stood in the center of the fountain. In 1855, the fountain was demolished, and the sculpture found its place on a console on the town hall tower. In 1985, as part of the redesign of the main market square, a new market fountain designed by Dresden sculptor Johannes Peschel was erected. "Knight Dutschmann" now stands again on a tall granite column in the center, although the badly damaged original sculpture was replaced with a copy.
