In 1407, the councilor Hermann von Unau gave his vineyard in front of the Nicolai tower to the cathedral chapter so that a cemetery could be laid out. This was consecrated as a cemetery in 1455. The late-Gothic Nicolaikirche with two naves built here in 1444 was the parish church of the Catholics from 1619 to 1621. It was destroyed in 1634 during the Thirty Years' War and has since been a ruin, with burials taking place in its interior since 1745. The battlement of the church ruin allows a view of the Spree crossing of the old trade route "via regia" with the hammer mill (1862) and the paper mill (16th century/1805).

The mayor of Uhna donated the vineyard to the church in 1407 with the condition that a church and a cemetery dedicated to St. Nicholas be built. The church was built in 1444 and the cemetery laid out 10 years later. After the Reformation in 1524 the church became deserted. In 1550 it became the parish church of the Catholic Sorbs. During the Thirty Years' War, the roof was removed and cannons were installed. In 1634 the church burned down in a town fire and has been a ruin ever since. The cemetery chapel was built in the middle of the 18th century and the church ruins were released as a burial place. The canons, deans and bishops found their last resting place around the cemetery chapel and in the church ruins. The wooden cross at the end of the cemetery was erected to commemorate those who died in the last wars.

The two-aisled Nicoleikirche was built in the late Gothic style in 1444. In the Thirty Years' War in 1634 it was destroyed after almost 200 years and has been in ruins ever since.

Behind the Nikolai Tower in Bautzen is the Nikolai Cemetery. The ruins of the St. Nicholas Church, built in the 15th century, can still be seen there today. The village communities belonging to the city of Bautzen, which were predominantly inhabited by Sorbs, used it as a parish church. During the Thirty Years' War, the sacred building was completely destroyed and the Sorbian parish of Bautzen found a new home in the Church of Our Lady. The interior of the ruins was used as a cemetery from the middle of the 18th century. Several bishops' graves can still be found on the remaining remains of the chapel's walls. Numerous Sorbian personalities also found their final resting place in the Nikolai Cemetery. The completely renovated battlement, which was built between the church and the city wall, is particularly worth seeing today. From there you have a wonderful view of the Spree Valley, the Protschenberg and the Seidau.
