The Preußischer Velmerstot is the highest elevation in the Egge Mountains at 468 m above sea level; the neighbouring Lippischer Velmerstot is its smaller brother at 441 m. The Velmerstot therefore has two peaks. Both peaks were border areas in the past; this explains the names Preußischer Velmerstot and Lippischer Velmerstot. The Silberbachtal valley lies very close to the peaks. Here the Egge Mountains and the Teutoburg Forest merge into one another. In 2003 the Eggeturm was built on the Preußischer Velmerstot - a 17 m high observation tower. From the tower you have a fascinating panoramic view over the Egge, Teutoburg Forest and Weserbergland as far as the Sauerland. As both peaks were grazed for centuries, extensive mountain heath areas developed here. In addition to blueberries and heather, some birch and pine trees have also colonised the rugged sandstone cliffs. The Prussian Velmerstot was a military restricted area until 1994. Today both peaks are protected.

It possesses the two summits Prussian Velmerstot (south summit, about 464 m above sea level NHN), whose summit rises in the area of Steinheim-Sandebeck in the circle Höxter, as well as the Lippische Velmerstot (⊙; Nordkuppe, 441.4 m), in the Area of Horn-Bad Meinberg is located in the district of Lippe. An absolute highlight that I tried to ride in the snow... As RADLER already said, the tower has been closed since November 5th, 2023, because someone wanted to kill themselves by burning, but then stopped. That's why the roof of the tower is now a bit blackened.
Even without climbing the tower, it's an area that's absolutely worth seeing!

With its twin peaks, the Velmerstot is one of the highest elevations in the Teutoburg Forest. The Velmerstot in Lippe is 441 m high, and the Prussian Velmerstot is 468 m high.
From 1964 to 1994, the Prussian Velmerstot was home to a Dutch NATO base with a radar station and missile base. After the military installation was dismantled, nature felt at home again. In 2003, the Hochstift Forestry Office built the imposing Eggeturm (Egg Tower), 17 m high, with a viewing platform at 9.15 m, on the former NATO base.

The impressive panoramic view is breathtaking. In good visibility, visitors can enjoy the 360° view from the Hermann Monument, across the Köterberg mountain range, all the way to the Solling or Sauerland. The adjacent nature reserve is home to rare birds such as hazel grouse, red kite, eagle owl, black woodpecker, middle woodpecker, grey woodpecker and black stork.
