              "In contrast to the maar, rainwater accumulated here around 80,000 years ago in a cinder cone crater created by an explosion. This is how the only crater lake north of the Alps that is constantly filled with rainwater was created: the Windsborn Crater Lake. The lake lies at an altitude of 497 meters above sea level. The crater has a diameter of 300 meters and is around 30 meters deep. The lake is slightly smaller. Its surface area is 13,000 square meters and its depth is 80 to 150 centimeters. But the crater lake is silting up from the outside in and is slowly shrinking.

              Many people find the atmosphere at the shallow lake to be magical. Narrow wooden walkways extend out onto the water and invite you to lie on your stomach and look at the reflected sky. Rare plant species have settled in the shore areas, such as the white-flowering marsh trefoil, the marsh marigold and peat mosses. Rare animal species such as the endangered Dragonfly species such as the "shining damselfly" or the "common emerald dragonfly" have found a new home in the silting zones. The unique biotope has been protected since the 1990s. As a result, in addition to swimming, fishing was also banned in the lake and a replacement fishing water was set up between the Mosenberg and the small town of Bettenfeld.

              The lake is surrounded by a ring wall made of welding slag that is up to 30 meters high. An absolute must, albeit a sweaty one, is the climb to the crater rim that rises above the water level. Once you have climbed it, the summit cross offers a unique view of the surrounding Eifel landscape and the Mosenberg-Meerfelder volcano group."
