A beautiful and very exciting way. It's definitely worth not taking the signposted shortcut back to the Heidsmühle, but rather climbing up the Wolfsschlucht - it's sure to be a lot of fun for little mountaineers too.

"When volcanism first started in the area around Manderscheid and Bettenfeld 45 million years ago, the landscape was changed as we still find it today, but only partially.
After the Mosenberg erupted more than 40,000 years ago, lava flowed into the valley of today's little Kyll. The original bed of little Kyll was repeatedly interrupted by the red-hot current and the water was dammed up. The water had no choice but to eat its way through the stone.
The so-called strudel pots or colts were also created over many years.
But what are strudel pots?
Swirl pots or colts are created by the erosion power of water. A whirlpool is formed due to differently solid rock or just because of an irregularity in the river (for example a tree root). This vortex whirls up the smallest rock fragments and thus grinds off the stone that is adjacent to the vortex.
There are two ways a strudel pot can be made. Either by turning the water on a soft rock (a horizontal whirlpool is created).

A vertical whirlpool pot is created
Water flows past a rock that lies in the river and due to the shape of the rock a whirlpool is created on one side. This whirlpool stands vertically in the water. In this whirlpool it rotates like the horizontal whirlpool rock and sand that was swept away by the current. Due to this effect, a hollow is cut into the rock. A strudel pot is created. Nice that at least the "little Kyll" in the Wolfsschlucht has enough water in the dry summer of 2022 to present an idyllic gorge with a wooden bridge. The "little one" has it all: it submerged our favorite restaurant Heidsmühle upstream by a whopping 5 meters during the Aartal storm in 2021.
