One of the most worth seeing buildings in Wissembourg is the salt house from the 15th century with its striking roof. The Salt Road also ran through Wissembourg early on.

Today we "slipped over" the German/French border to Wissembourg, one of the most beautiful towns in Alsace.

Wissembourg, also known in German as Weissenburg, is located directly on the German-French border in Alsace.

Directly on the banks of the Lauter River is the historic old town with its many half-timbered houses, which still characterize Wissembourg today. Some of them date back to the late Middle Ages. But the small town in Alsace looks back on a longer history. Above all, the monastery founded in the 7th century, which soon became an abbey,

ensured a steadily growing settlement. Between the beginning of the 14th and the late 17th centuries, Wissembourg was one of the Alsatian imperial cities.

The long history of the town, which has a population of just under 8,000, can be discovered on a leisurely stroll through the narrow streets. The old town is still surrounded by the remains of the old city fortifications. The towers of the Abbey Church of St. Peter and St. Paul are a defining feature of the historic center. They form the northern starting point of the Romanesque Road, which connects Romanesque monuments in Alsace. The predominantly Gothic Abbey Church of Saints-Pierre-et-Paul is one of the largest churches in the Bas-Rhin outside of Strasbourg. Also worth seeing are the 15th-century Salt House, the 16th-century Maison de l'ami Fritz, and the neoclassical town hall, a central work of Strasbourg's city architect Joseph Massol. Gourmets also appreciate Wissembourg: the town is home to several excellent restaurants, and the "Caves de Wissembourg" winery sells fresh Alsatian wine from the surrounding area. Due to its compact size, Wissembourg is best explored on foot, as we can happily confirm and recommend. It's truly worth it.
We were very pleasantly surprised. 😉

Washing day was once a week. Then the women met at the washing place. In Wissembourg in the Quartier du Bruch on the Lauter you can still see this well-preserved washing place.
Washing was not seen as a chore, but was part of social life: people were happy, sang, told stories or exchanged news - one of the first chat rooms 😉

On August 4, 1870, Prussian troops defeated the French in the Battle of Weissenburg. Two well-kept monuments - one for the French and one for the German fallen - on the Geisberg on the Wissembourg-Riedseltz road commemorate the many fallen soldiers. Citizens from Wissembourg fought as soldiers on the French side.
With the Peace of Frankfurt (1871), Alsace (with Wissembourg) and Lorraine were incorporated into the newly founded German Empire. From June 28, 1871 to 1918, the city was part of the Reichsland Alsace-Lorraine.
After the First World War, the city was added to France along with Alsace under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. During the Second World War from 1940 to 1944/1945, the city and the country were annexed by the German Reich. In March 1945, the city and the surrounding area were captured by US troops as part of Operation Undertone.
The city has been part of France again since 1945. Negotiations continued until 1990 regarding sovereignty over the Mundat Forest in the north of Wissembourg in the Palatinate.

                  Beautiful old town.

The best way to explore is on foot, along the Circuit des Remparts (circular path above the city walls). If you don't want to walk, you can take the "Sightseeing Train" through the city. Departure is at the Tourist Information Office.

The beginnings of the town go back to the middle of the 7th century, when Benedictine monks founded an abbey, St Peter and Paul, on an island of Lauter. The abbey soon has 200 km2 and enriches itself so much that it is the richest Alsatian abbey in 974 and elevated to the Principality. During the 10th century, a Romanesque church was built, of which only the bell tower remains today. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, a village is built around the abbey, which is rapidly expanding and wants to break away from the rule of the abbey, causing several conflicts. The city manages to get members in the council and is experiencing its heyday. Their wealth comes from sheet production, wine and chestnuts.

During the 14th century, the city freed itself more and more from the abbey and in 1354 became a member of the Ten Cities. The leaders do not want to succumb to the new abbot. The various conflicts in the 15th century lead to the destruction of the city by the Palatine Duke, ally of the abbey.

The Reformation made its entry during the 16th century and achieved great success. Then black times come: Peasants rebellion, Thirty Years' War and the passage of various armies ... Weissenburg, as well as the rest of Alsace, becomes French, but the city remains only ... 140 inhabitants.

During the revolution, the monks are expelled from the monastery and the abbey's goods are sold.

In 1870, the city knows its first battle, that of the Geisberg, and the defeat of France. After the end of the war, Alsace and the city become German.
The city is flourishing again and its history is that of Alsace.

The small town right on the border is very popular with tourists (rightly so). Here you will find everything you would expect in Alsace. Outside of the season and at weekends, it's really nice here.

A great old town right on the German-French border. Can be reached by train from Landau in half an hour and is still part of the transport association.
In addition to the actual old town, there is the opportunity to enjoy the view of the same from the old city wall.
Outside there are still some impressive redwoods growing.

Wissembourg's old town is still partially enclosed by the remains of the old city fortifications. It is the northern starting point of the Romanesque Road, which leads through towns in Alsace with Romanesque monuments. Here in Wissembourg, these are the Abbey Church of St. Peter and Paul, and in Altenstadt, the parish church from the 11th/12th century.

The Gothic Abbey Church of Saints-Pierre-et-Paul (St. Peter and Paul), with its Romanesque bell tower, is one of the largest churches in the Bas-Rhin outside of Strasbourg. If you have a little time, take a look inside to see the stained glass windows and wall paintings from the 14th/15th centuries and the original organ from 1766. It has one of the most magnificent cases in Alsace. All that remains of the old monastery is an unfinished High Gothic cloister, which is, however, considered one of the most beautiful in the Upper Rhine region.

Dining options: Restaurant A l'Ange or Restaurant Au Petit Domincain. Cafe Rebert is also definitely worth a visit, as Daniel Rebert's wonderful creations are irresistible.
