The Princes' Island was purchased by Emperor Wilhelm II in 1910 and is still owned by the House of Hohenzollern today. Forest, swampy terrain, a sandy beach and four large paddocks characterize the landscape. The sons of the last emperor once learned about farming here. Their mother, Empress Auguste Victoria, enjoyed her idyllic favorite places here, far away from court life.

If someone had shown me the pictures, I would never have guessed that this could be on Plöner See. The little detour to the "island was definitely worth it 😊👍

The Prince's Island is a peninsula in the Great Plön Lake southwest of the town of Plön in Schleswig-Holstein.

The Prince's Island, which became a peninsula in the 19th century by artificially lowering the water level, is about 2 kilometers long and in places only about 30 meters wide. At the southern end is the Lower Saxon farmhouse from the 17th century, which is now run as an inn with geese and Heidschnucke breeding. The Prince's Island is mostly wooded and some of the shores are swampy. It is closed to motorized traffic.

On the former farm, the sons of the last German Emperor Wilhelm II, who had acquired the island, learned basic agricultural skills while they lived in the Prince's House on the mainland. The favorite place of the last German Empress, Auguste Viktoria, was at the southern tip of the Prince's Island.

The ships of the Great Plön Lake tour dock near the Lower Saxon farmhouse. The inscription on the farmhouse reads nihil melius nihil homini libero dignius agricultura 1901 (“Nothing is better, nothing more worthy of a free man than agriculture”).

The peninsula also has an outdoor swimming pool, known as Prinzenbad because the sons of the Hohenzollerns learned to swim there. It is characterized by a fine sandy beach on the west side, where the lake bed slopes down only slowly, so that at a distance of 30 meters from the shore the water only reaches a depth of 1.20 meters. While a campsite and a small-scale restaurant operated here between 1947 and 1963, bathers are now mostly on their own. The modern buildings, which have replaced the earlier ones, house the guard station of the German Life-Saving Society Plön, among other things. The island is now privately owned by Georg Friedrich Prince of Prussia.

Quite banal: The Prinzenbad offers a view of a magnificent sunset while taking a refreshing swim after a long journey. There are also three free beach chairs and a picnic bench ☺️

The elongated Prinzeninsel (Prince's Island) is a must-see for every Plön visitor.

Turned into a peninsula in the 19th century by artificially lowering the water level, the Prinzeninsel (Prince's Island) is approximately 2 km long and only about 30 m wide in places.

The Prinzenbad (Prince's Pool) is a popular bathing spot in Plön, accessible only on foot or by bike. You can easily combine swimming with a walk or bike ride along the water.

The Prince's Island - tradition obliges
No question: The Prince's Island in Lake Plön is a place with history. Acquired by Emperor Wilhelm II in 1910, it is still owned by his descendants today. Here, tradition and enjoyment are combined in a unique way. Where the last emperor's sons once learned to appreciate agriculture and where Empress Auguste Victoria loved to linger, you can now enjoy exquisite culinary delights. As a reminder of earlier times, there are also numerous historical exhibits from the imperial era. The route to the island is also unique: In order to disturb the unique nature as little as possible, the Prince's Island is closed to motorized traffic. However, a picturesque hiking trail, which can also be traveled by bike, or the excursion steamers on the Plön lake tour will take you there.

The Lower Saxon farmhouse was built as a residential house in 1693/1694. From 1900 onwards it was used by the sons of Kaiser Wilhelm II, who attended school in Plön and learned farming on the island.
The Latin inscription above the house entrance also dates from this period and reads: "There is nothing better, nothing more worthy of the free man, than farming".

From the jetty you have fantastic views over the Great Plön Lake to Plön Castle in the distance.
The Great Plön Lake Tour continues from the Fegetasche jetty to the mooring points in Plön and also to the Prinzeninsel. At the Prinzeninsel jetty you have the opportunity to combine the Great Plön Lake Tour with the Bosau trip. The Great Plön Lake Tour leads to the western part of the Great Plön Lake to the Dersau and Ascheberg jetties. The return journey is interrupted again at the Prinzeninsel jetty before returning to the Fegetasche jetty.

The Prince's Island in the Great Plön Lake is not only characterized by its idyllic location in the middle of Holstein Switzerland, but also by its historical significance.

Since the late 17th century, it has been, among other things, a leasehold of court gardeners, the summer residence of a Lübeck councilor, a fishing paradise for a Danish king and a popular excursion destination for the people of Plön. From 1901 onwards, it was converted into a "Prince's Farm" for the sons of the last German Emperor and was finally acquired by Wilhelm II in 1910.

Although it is still owned by the House of Prussia, it is now open to the public and invites you to take a stroll through its unusual history. In the Lower Saxon farmhouse, where the Hohenzollern princes learned the basics of agriculture and studied botany, you can now enjoy exquisite culinary delights. In addition, numerous exhibits from the imperial era recall this era of use by the House of Hohenzollern.

Before that, for many centuries only its tip, which belonged to the castle area, protruded from the Great Plön Lake.
It is a peninsula in the extension of the castle garden, on which there used to be an agricultural property. The sons of the German Emperor Wilhelm II learned the trade of the farmer or farmer on this farm.

Empress Auguste-Victoria often visited her sons on the Prince's Island. A small pavilion on the tip of the peninsula marks the Empress's favorite place during her visits there.
The Prince's Island can only be explored on foot or by bike. It can be reached on foot via the beach path in just over 45 minutes from the city center.
The path leads past the Plön boat rental, the former boarding school boathouse, the Seven Star at the end of the castle garden, the most beautiful bathing spot on the Great Plön Lake and the Lower Saxon farmhouse.
