The Fortified Position of Liège 1 was part of a vast network of fortifications intended to protect the country from enemy invasion. The orientation table leans against this former "bunker" and offers a magnificent panorama. Hand carved from one ton blue stone 1.5 meters in diameter, this orientation table is also readable for the visually impaired!

Within a quarter of a century, the province of Liège twice suffered the fate of being unluckily involved in the beginning of a conflict that swept Belgium and beyond, the whole of Western Europe and even part of the rest of the world, into a terrible frenzy of destruction. Right in the middle of this terrain rises the imposing fortified position of Liège, whose first 12, then 16 forts checked the enemy's advance with zeal and conviction in 1914 and again in 1940.

The fortified position of the city of Liège (Belgium) was part of an extensive network of fortresses to protect against enemy invasion. It forms an arc that extends from Comblain-au-Pont to Visé.

The defensive lines around Liège stretched for 60 kilometers and consisted of strong "modern" blockhouses (Tancremont, Battice and Aubin-Neufchâteau) and smaller bunkers. The line formed a shield around the city of Liège and was built between 1934 and 1935.

The fortified position of Liège was divided into defensive lines:

- The forward positions with 65 shelters;

- Liège 1 defense area included 178 bunkers and the three strong blockhouses mentioned above;

- Liège 2 defense area consisting of 62 bunkers and 6 modernized old fortresses;

- Liège 3 defense area with 41 bunkers;

- Liège 4 defense area with 37 bunkers and 2 modernized old forts.

The MN18 observation bunker is located in the Liège 1 defense area, Margarine – Neufchâteau (MN). This area contained 31 bunkers, of which only 3 were used: bunkers MN18, MN11 (Macra) and MN29 (Bois del Fiesse / Croix de Charneux). Serious dramas took place in these last two bunkers. ..."
