Until the 1930s, the "Stone House" was a large, stony basaltic sea. The basalt columns towered up to 12 m. They were witnesses of the Rhön volcanism 30 to 10 million years ago. The deepest part of the crater left by basalt mining later filled up with water and the current lake was created. Today, the basalt lake with the "Stone House" is a popular destination. There is a car park, a kiosk and a barbecue station.

The basalt lake is a beautifully situated small lake that you can easily hike to, for example, from the Red Moor via Heidelstein.
