On the one hand, it is a "real" mountain for our region and on the other hand, you have a really fantastic view from here. At the time of our visit, the deciduous forest was in a beautiful autumn dress, and the Gausche Tower was found in its shadow on the leaves.

The tower is privately owned, but is supported by the municipality.

The opening times:

* November to March in good weather from 10 a.m. to sunset

At 65 m above sea level, the Litberg is the highest elevation in the Stade district. It is located about 2.5 km south of Beckdorf in the municipality of Sauensiek. The Litberg is a small hill covered with birch, pine, willow and alder trees, which was formed as a glacial moraine. It forms a landscape conservation area on the Geest west of the Harburg Mountains.

Carl Friedrich Gauss was to survey the Kingdom of Hanover from 1821 (Gaussian survey). He was able to overcome the problems that arose in the North German lowlands (lack of landscape surveys) with the help of the Litberg, among other things, where he set up a surveying tower in order to be able to better target his targets in Hamburg-Altona, Hohenhorn, Elmenhorst and Zeven. This survey was later documented on the back of a 10-Deutsche Mark note.
