Geologists say that the granite lumps in the river bed come from a rock fall. A completely different explanation is given by the Falkenberg knight Kuno, who once again stalked an innocent girl. After all, there was no other way to save herself from the pursuers than with a quick prayer and a courageous leap into the Waldnaab. Suddenly it became very quiet behind her - Knight Kuno, his entourage and horses remained in the river bed, transformed into boulders.

There is a narrow section with a steep gradient between the Sauerbrunnen and the log cabin. Strudel (standing rollers) have ground whirl holes in the granite with millstones and so-called pseudo whirl holes through sand and gravel. The water power necessary to form the whirlpool hole comes from the comparatively large gradient at the narrow point at the butter churn. Here we have a level difference of about 4 meters over a 40 meter run, between Falkenberg and Windischeschenbach it is only 40 meters over a total of 15 km.

The so-called Butterfaß, rocks that block the course of the Waldnaab and bring it to froth, is one of the many highlights on the riverside path of the Waldnaab from Falkenberg to Neuhaus (stage N03 from Goldsteig). This river valley is a gem of nature and you should take time to enjoy it, there are only a few such unspoiled spots in Germany
