At the sight of the rock garden, a lady-in-waiting is said to have exclaimed in 1746: "Ah, c'est sans pareil" - "That is unequaled!", Whereupon Margrave Friedrich ordered the renaming of the town of Zwernitz in Sanspareil in the same year. And indeed, this name is very appropriate for the rock garden. Individual geometric garden areas were embedded in an almost natural forest environment, which is characterized by bizarre rock formations. On some of the rocks, exotic-looking cottages and rural huts were built, which served as retreats in the "Hermitage Sanspareil". Many of these buildings decayed over time or were sold to demolition in the 19th century.

Today, however, is still the ruin theater - a mixture of grotto and ruin. The auditorium is under a powerful natural rock arch; The orchestra pit, the backdrop arches and the back wall are made of quarry stones. "Behind this miraculous arch, however, you can see the theater emerging from rocks, and embellished and corrected by the hand of art ... The whole makes a powerful and indescribable impression in its position, form and arrangement ..." (From a travelogue of 1812)

The volcanic grotto is one of the highlights in the Sanspareil rock garden. The following can be read on the plaque at the grotto:
โ€œAccording to ancient mythology, the Volcano Grotto represents the forge of the god Vulcan, in which the free Cyclopes made thunderbolts for Jupiter. In the novel โ€œThe Adventures of Telemachusโ€ by Fenelon it is described that the goddess Minerva had Vulkan make weapons for Telemachus there. She gave him these weapons in the form of the Mentor. Equipped with divine weapons and additionally protected by the Aegide, Minerva's protective shield, Telemachus survived the campaign against King Adrast victoriously."

In the rock garden of Sanspareil you can linger for a while and enjoy and explore the rocks as well as the use at that time. Unfortunately, the rock garden has become very overgrown, so that there are no more prospects.

The area around the medieval Zwernitz Castle had served as a hunting ground for the Margraves since early times. In 1744, the plan was born to create something like a wonder garden at this remote location. From 1744 to 1748, there was a flurry of construction activity, as the naturally grown rocky grove was to be decorated with a small palace, a belvedere, and a ruined theater by the time of their daughter Friederike's wedding.
Upon seeing the rock garden in 1746, a lady-in-waiting is said to have exclaimed: "Ah, c'est sans pareil" โ€“ "This is without equal!", whereupon Margrave Friedrich ordered the renaming of the town of Zwernitz to Sanspareil that same year.
Exotic-looking cottages and rustic huts were built on some of the rocks, serving as retreats in the "Sanspareil Hermitage." Many of these buildings fell into disrepair over time or were sold for demolition in the 19th century.

Sanspareil ([sษ‘paส€ษ›j], German unparalleled, the locals pronounce the word Sanspareil however German) is a village in the municipality Wonsees (district Kulmbach in Upper Franconia), which was known by the rock garden Sanspareil below the medieval Hohenzollern castle Zwernitz.
The garden was laid out by Markgrรคfin Wilhelmine von Bayreuth, the sister of Frederick the Great, in 1744. The architects of the rock garden named Joseph Saint-Pierre and Giovanni Battista Pedrozzi. The name of the park goes back to the exclamation of a lady-in-waiting of the Bayreuth Margrave: "C'est sans pareil!" (This is unequaled!). Margravine Wilhelmine also intended to have customary water games built here at that time. However, this was not feasible in view of the situation with funds at that time, so that the entire system could not be expanded further. The interest of the Margravine was therefore significantly reduced. The garden was completed by Margrave Carl Alexander. The rock theater was designed as a Roman ruin, where a natural rock grotto serves as an auditorium.
                      ย
In the following centuries the plant fell into decay. The many buildings disappeared because they were made of wood, especially in the park, or were sold for demolition to make way for a street. At present, only the Oriental building, the rock theater and the kitchen are present. In 1984, the lowered ground floor between the Oriental building and the kitchen was reconstructed after a engraving template from 1748.

The rock garden Sanspareil (French sans pareil [sษ‘paส€ษ›j] = unequal) is a 1744-1748 created English landscape garden near the Upper Franconian community Wonsees in the district of Kulmbach. The garden includes the existing rock structure of the Franconian Jura and the medieval castle of Zwernitz as staffages in the garden concept, the execution of which Margrave Friedrich von Bayreuth began and completed his wife Margravine Wilhelmine of Bayreuth according to their ideas (Wikipedia)

The 13 hectare rock garden in Sanspareil, from the French sans pareil for 'unparalleled', is a garden complex that was built between 1744 and 1748. In the middle of bizarre limestone formations, a pleasure garden was created that was far ahead of its time. In modern times he founded an independent garden genre. The garden is well developed - most of the paths are suitable for strollers and wheelchairs.
The many buildings disappeared over time because they were only made of wood, especially in the park. The ruin theater, which is worth seeing, is still there today - a mixture of grotto and ruins. The auditorium is located under a mighty natural rock arch; the orchestra pit, the backdrop arches and the back wall are made of quarry stone. Explorers will then find the Dianen Grotto, the Volcano Cave and the Bear Hole along the way. The chicken hole used to be the exit of the park through which everyone had to squeeze. Fun from back then...
The Oriental Building, which served as a rural hermitage, is also particularly attractive. Opposite it is the so-called 'kitchen building' - today a castle cafรฉ in summer.
In the immediate vicinity of the Felsengarten in Sanspareil, the medieval Zwernitz Castle from 1156 is a charming addition, from whose keep you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of Franconian Switzerland.
