The first cathedral was consecrated on the Spreeinsel back in 1536. After this had become dilapidated, Frederick II had a new cathedral built (1747) and the electoral coffins transferred to the building. This building no longer exists either, but the Hohenzollern crypt does, which occupies almost the entire basement of the current third cathedral, inaugurated in 1905 and built by Wilhelm II.

A visit is worthwhile, because the construction and the equipment are overwhelming. If you like, you can climb up to the dome and enjoy the view over the city. Information on opening hours and events can be found here: berlinerdom.de.

Berlin Cathedral
The Berlin Cathedral (officially: Oberpfarr- und Domkirche zu Berlin) at the Lustgarten on the Museum Island is a Protestant church in the Mitte district of Berlin. Built in the years 1894-1905 according to designs by Julius Raschdorff in the neo-Renaissance and neo-Baroque style, the monument is the largest Protestant church in Germany in terms of area and one of the most important dynastic burial sites in Europe. In addition to church services, the cathedral is also used for state ceremonies, concerts and other events.
