The Petrikirche itself was surrounded by a ring of half-timbered houses, and the old market square was also nearby. A large stairway led from the plateau of the Petrikirche down to the Bachstraße and west down to the banks of the Ruhr over the Delle, which represented the main street of Mülheim in the first half of the 19th century. To the east, the development was limited by a large mill pond, which was only filled in in the second half of the 19th century for the construction of the Kaiserplatz. To the north, the Rumbach still ran openly through the village. The existing, often slated half-timbered buildings of the Bergian type were increasingly joined by massive houses made of brick and plaster. There are still some densely built-over plots of land with narrow passages to narrow rear buildings, typical dwellings of ordinary citizens, often boatmen or day labourers.
