The medieval castle in Simmern was expanded under Duke Friedrich I (1459-1480) to become the residence of the Simmern dukes, but was completely destroyed just 200 years later in the Palatinate War of Succession (1689).

The current New Castle was built in 1708-1713 as the seat of the Palatinate chief magistrate. The building consists of a main building with two protruding side wings in the classical style. Originally, the complex was surrounded by the castle pond on both sides. After Napoleon gave the castle to the city in 1802, it was used as a court, later as a school, garrison, prison and official residence.

Today the building houses a ballroom with a foyer and kitchen, the Hunsrück Museum, the photo archive of the town and community of Simmern, the town library in the palace, the wedding room, tourist information and the art collection of the famous painter and sculptor Friedrich Karl Ströher.
