The lower town of the old shipping town of Lauenburg is worth a trip. The lower town is at risk from every powerful Elbe flood. The water levels are marked at one point. The last floods were a disaster for every owner. People who had recently renovated had to start all over again.
The lower town is home to many artisans and many restaurants. There is a lot to discover.

It's also worth taking a long walk along the Elbe to the former match factory (now a youth hostel), the winter pictures come from there (05.02.2012). The way back takes you through the old town or vice versa. If you dare, go from the lower town up to the castle. You will be rewarded with a wonderful view at the top.

Lauenburg is the home port of the steam-powered paddle steamer Kaiser-Wilhelm.

The best view of Lauenburg is from Hohnstorf.

Lauenburg is simply beautiful, with its old town center. Cycling is sometimes a bit tedious due to the many cobblestone streets - but what there is to see makes the effort worth it.

Perfect for stopping off from a bike ride or a hike. There are many cafes in the old town, also right on the water, perfect when the sun is shining. The old town has been preserved in an unbelievably great condition.

beautiful old town. Here you have to bring time, turn off the car and then discover the old town on foot. Then marvel at the Elbe bridge and the beautiful city panorama! Overnight stay. then you can make a walk in the morning and in the afternoon light.

Located directly on the banks and slopes of the Elbe, historic half-timbered houses line up on Elbstrasse. With its many lovingly renovated houses, the old town of Lauenburg is the largest monument ensemble in all of Schleswig-Holstein.
History comes to life on a walk over the old cobblestones of the shipping town. Numerous small alleys and stairs connect the old town with the upper town.
The castle there with its castle tower and prince's garden is reminiscent of the time of the Ascanian dukes.
The Elbe has shaped the history of the city. And shipping itself can still be experienced in Lauenburg. Modern passenger ships and historic steamships
invite you to take tours on the Elbe, the Elbe-Lübeck Canal or the Elbe-Seiten Canal. The long-distance cycle routes "Elberadweg", "Alte Salzstraße", "Hamburg-Rügen" and the "Iron Curtain Trail" also cross in Lauenburg near the waterways. They offer a wonderful opportunity to explore the area by bike.
It's worth pushing your bike through the old town. The historic cobblestones are a bit bumpy to ride on, but that would still be possible.

The city has a remarkable old town. Nearby is the Palm Lock, the oldest surviving boiler lock in Germany, at the beginning of the old Stecknitz Canal. Also worth seeing is the old Maria Magdalene Church, which was founded around 1220 and is a significant architectural monument from the 13th century. The remains of the Lauenburg Castle can be found on the Schlossberg.
