I found an interesting article by Christian Rößler from Freiburg on the internet. Many thanks for the effort and the pictures to Christian Rößler.

His statement: The Rauhberg tunnel is a pretty pointless structure, probably a flak position belonging to the Siegfried Line with ammunition storage in the tunnel. It is located in a fairly high position between Hauenstein and Spirkelbach in the Palatinate.

The Rauhberg tunnel is a very interesting location for me.

If you want to cross the approx. 100 meter long tunnel, you should start it on the Spirkelbacher side (Komoot highlight point), as there is a small rock step to climb at the exit on the Hauensteiner side and this could be slippery on the descent due to sand.

Fortunately, I always have my powerful headlamp with me so that I could go through the entire tunnel. A piece of the ceiling has broken down in the middle of the tunnel.

Somehow you get lost when you come out at the other end of the tunnel. Thanks to Komoot (but also without it) no problem😂

Should bats really hibernate, as Angelika writes, signs should be put up analogous to the falcon brood. Personally, I would find it a shame to close the entire facility all year round.

Addendum 09.2021:

1) The rear exit is locked so that you can save yourself the ascent over the sandy rock barrier !!!!

2) There is a sign on the front door

"Hibernation. Please do not enter from November to March. Thank you" and

"Dear Komoot community, this is not a hiking highlight"

For me it is a historical highlight, which is interesting and there is nothing against entering the tunnel in summer.

!!!! BUT YOU SHOULD NEVER ENTER THE TUNNEL IN WINTER AND ALLOW THE BATS TO SLEEP AND DELAY THE VISIT TO SUMMER !!!!
