One of the most outstanding architectural monuments in northern Germany is the historic Lüneburg town hall with its famous court arbor, the former council chamber, which was designed by an unknown master. It was started around 1230, expanded over the centuries and is considered the largest medieval town hall in northern Germany. A bronze statue of the goddess of the moon adorns the lunar fountain in front of the town hall with a bow and arrow; the original from 1532 was stolen and melted down in 1970; today's bust is a replica from 1972.

The front view shows the baroque facade (1706-1720), the lower court (1389) remains of the old facade. It is behind the iron fence on the right. In order to grasp the entire complex, it is worth walking around the town hall (driving is also possible). For a long time the town hall was hidden behind scaffolding, at the moment "only" the court arbor is equipped. The town hall should be completely renovated and modernized by 2024-2025.

The tourist information is on the left. In front of it stands a lovingly designed bronze model of the old city center that also wants to be felt.

Wed + Sat the weekly market takes place in front of the town hall (approx. 7:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.).

The historic town hall in Lüneburg is an absolute speciality: It was built over the course of several centuries and houses buildings from many different styles. The main building was built around 1230 and is still the seat of the Lüneburg administration today. The Lüneburg town hall is the largest medieval town hall in northern Germany.

The wealth of the Hanseatic League in Lüneburg is also reflected in the town hall. The impressive parts of the building, such as the courthouse, prince's hall, old archive, chancellery and large council chamber, can only be viewed during guided tours because they are so valuable. Since the town hall suffered no war damage, it is wonderfully preserved.

If you hear a carillon, it is coming from the town hall tower. Here there is a carillon made of Meissen porcelain that plays regularly.

The floor of the courthouse is still in its original condition from the 14th century and is covered with glass panels. The ceiling and wall paintings are impressive and depict the Last Judgement. The late Gothic windows have also been preserved. The room also contains a chest in which the council silver was kept. Lüneburg had become very rich thanks to salt, and the town hall had the largest silver treasure of all German towns.

A barely visible door set into the wall of the courthouse was an innovation at the time. It was the so-called "home", the toilet. What was innovative was that it was inside the building, whereas in most residential buildings it was outside.
The Prince's Hall is one of the largest pillar-free halls of its time and is therefore a real work of art. The Lüneburg princes can be found on the walls.
The large council chamber is richly decorated with oak carvings and wall paintings. The hall was built during the Renaissance and is an ideal example of how the Lüneburg people repeatedly enlarged the town hall with extensions. The mayors of Lüneburg were also elected in the council chamber. Only salt masters (salt boiling masters) could be elected to the council. For centuries, around 40 families determined the fate of the town.
Lüneburg Town Hall can only be visited with a guided tour.
