The Himmelfahrt Fundgrube is a former ore mine in Freiberg. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Ore Mountains Mining Region since 2019. The Himmelfahrt Fundgrube is the last permanently open pit in the Freiberg district. However, no ore has been mined since 1968. The TU Bergakademie Freiberg uses the Himmelfahrt Fundgrube with its shafts "Reiche Zeche" and "Alte Elisabeth" as a teaching and research mine and is the operator of the mine. The Ascension Treasure Trove has been open to visitors since 1991. The headframe of the Reiche Zeche shaft, which is part of the Himmelfahrt Fundgrube, is visible from afar and is one of the most important landmarks of the city of Freiberg today.

With 800 years of tradition and 1,000 ore veins, the Freiberg silver mine is one of the largest and oldest in Saxony.

There is something for everyone in the Freiberg silver mine. The underground educational trail is particularly recommended for children (from the age of 6) and people (also older than 75 years) who are visiting a mine for the first time.

The silver mine offers three different tours for the open pit with all its winding corridors and tunnels. More information about the pit tour, adventure tour and expert tour can be found here.

For guests who find it difficult to enter the mine or are denied access for other reasons, the surface tour offers interesting insights into the mining and research landscape of the Reichen Zeche.

The Vordere and Hintere Reiche Zeche are Freiberg's oldest known shafts, dating back to 1384. The new Reiche Zeche shaft was built in the 19th century as a straightening shaft and later grew into an important production shaft. After the mines were closed, the Reiche Zeche became a teaching and research facility. The day buildings, wheelhouses and routes have been preserved under monument protection and document silver mining from the Middle Ages to the recent past. The Freiberg silver mine is an important part of research and teaching at the TU Bergakademie and one of the most important mines in Saxony.
The Freiberg vein ore deposit is the basis for the development of mining and metallurgy in the Ore Mountains. The "underground Freiberg" extends over an area of 5 x 6 km below the silver city and beyond. Around 5,400 tons of silver were mined in the entire history of mining in the Freiberg area.
