Strudlhofstiege from November 29, 1910
It is named after the sculptor and painter Peter Strudel, who owned property above the stairs and had the Strud(e)lhof built there in 1690. The complex is decorated with a two-part fountain. Above the lower basin a head mask serves as a gargoyle, above the upper basin a fish mouth dispenses water. The parts of the staircase that are now painted green were originally painted blue. The renovation in 1961/62 was followed by further renovations in 1983 and 2008/09. Most recently - over a one-year construction period and at a cost of around 1.5 million euros - the stone and metal, including the candelabra, were replaced and the two fountains were reconstructed. The historical model of the gargoyle could be found for the upper one. In place of the mosaic background from the 1960s, the fish head is now surrounded by a relief made of Danube pebbles - based on the original design. The biggest challenge was to preserve the old look of the stairs using modern means and materials. This also includes the renewal of the lighting, which is now replaced by energy-saving hanging lights instead of the familiar ball lamps.

The Strudlhofstiege, which leads from the Strudlhofgasse down to the Liechtensteinstrasse at the level of the Palais Liechtenstein, was designed by Theodor Johann Jaeger in 1910 for the Vienna City Building Office. It was built from Mannersdorfer limestone and is considered an important building of Viennese Art Nouveau.
