Very beautiful baroque castle in the midst of the profane buildings of Fulda. You can visit the magnificent former residence of the Fulda prince abbots and prince bishops, as some parts of the palace have been reconstructed as historical rooms. The city administration of Fulda resides in other parts of the complex.

The city palace, with its preserved historical rooms, offers insights into the princely living culture of the Baroque and Classicism periods. Its predecessors were an abbot's castle (around 1300) and a four-wing Renaissance palace built between 1607 and 1612, which was redesigned from 1706 to 1721 according to plans by Johannes Dientzenhofer and served as the Baroque residence of the prince-abbots and prince-bishops of Fulda.

A real eye-catcher awaits visitors in the renovated castle courtyard in Fulda: a statue in the middle of the renovated castle courtyard is the new eye-catcher. It shows the legendary rider and his horse. The bronze sculpture comes from the sculptor Valerie Otte from Berlin. The rider deliberately stands at ground level next to his horse. The viewer should be able to imagine what it might have been like back then.

Johann Dientzenhofer (1663-1726) came to Fulda in 1700 on the recommendation of the Bamberg prince-bishop and was appointed princely titular master builder by the Fulda prince-abbot Adalbert von Schleifras. He was commissioned to build a church for the Fulda high society, which he planned as a three-aisled basilica and which was consecrated in 1712 to the patron saint Christ Salvator. Since 1752, this church is the High Cathedral of Fulda, after the abbot had become bishop. At the same time, Dientzenhofer redesigned the town palace in baroque style - originally the castle was a Abtsburg, built at the beginning of the 14th century. Later, at the beginning of the 17th century, the castle was rebuilt into a palace complex and extended in the last quarter of the 17th century as a renaissance castle.

Johann Dientzenhofer (1663-1726), after whose plans the Fuldaer city castle was built, was a master builder of the Barockzeit. Its most famous buildings include the city palace and the cathedral in Fulda, the façade of the Neumünster Abbey in Würzburg and the Banz Monastery, a former Benedictine monastery near Bamberg.

Most of the castle now serves as the seat of the city administration. Some parts have been reconstructed as historical rooms. They offer a glimpse into the world of absolutism. Visitors can see the baroque ballroom and its magnificent adjoining rooms with the Fürstensaal. The centerpiece of the tour is the living quarters of the Fulda prince abbots and prince bishops of the 18th century. The princely apartment was furnished around 1730 and redesigned in the 1750s in the Rococo style. Glamorous frames and mirrors, valuable wallpaper and paintings take the guest to the heyday of absolutist rule.

The life-size Spätlese rider with his horse, by Silvia Otteau from Berlin, has been standing in the renovated castle courtyard since September 2021. It looks very lifelike and detailed and even puzzles some locals; what he is holding in his hand. Only on closer inspection can you see that they are grapes. According to the story, in the 18th century, the messenger who was supposed to obtain permission from the Prince Abbot of Fulda to harvest the grapes on the Johannisberg model estate (near Rüdesheim) was so late that the grapes on the vine were already rotten and shriveled. Nevertheless, the monks pressed the wine and the noble rot of the grapes is said to have given rise to the Spätlese.

The Fulda City Palace, today the seat of the city administration, was built between 1708 and 1714 as the residence of the Fulda prince abbots and later the prince bishops. The architect was the master builder Johann Dientzenhofer, commissioned by Prince Abbot Adalbert I von Schleifras. It was the era that has shaped the cityscape of Fulda to this day: parallel to the construction of the palace, the magnificent baroque cathedral of St. Salvator (1704 - 1712) was built opposite - also according to Dientzenhofer's plans.
