Very beautiful baroque castle in the midst of the profane buildings of Fulda. You can visit the magnificent former residence of the Fulda prince abbots and prince bishops, as some parts of the palace have been reconstructed as historical rooms. The city administration of Fulda resides in other parts of the complex.

The city palace, with its preserved historical rooms, offers insights into the princely living culture of the Baroque and Classicism periods. Its predecessors were an abbot's castle (around 1300) and a four-wing Renaissance palace built between 1607 and 1612, which was redesigned from 1706 to 1721 according to plans by Johannes Dientzenhofer and served as the Baroque residence of the prince-abbots and prince-bishops of Fulda.

Johann Dientzenhofer (1663-1726) came to Fulda in 1700 on the recommendation of the Bamberg prince-bishop and was appointed princely titular master builder by the Fulda prince-abbot Adalbert von Schleifras. He was commissioned to build a church for the Fulda high society, which he planned as a three-aisled basilica and which was consecrated in 1712 to the patron saint Christ Salvator. Since 1752, this church is the High Cathedral of Fulda, after the abbot had become bishop. At the same time, Dientzenhofer redesigned the town palace in baroque style - originally the castle was a Abtsburg, built at the beginning of the 14th century. Later, at the beginning of the 17th century, the castle was rebuilt into a palace complex and extended in the last quarter of the 17th century as a renaissance castle.

The Stadtschloss Fulda is a baroque palace. Although some parts of the castle are used by the city administration, many rooms are still in their original state. In addition, many paintings and valuable porcelain are exhibited in the castle.

The castle can be visited daily except Mondays between 10 and 17 o'clock. The entrance costs 3.50 €.

The life-size Spätlese rider with his horse, by Silvia Otteau from Berlin, has been standing in the renovated castle courtyard since September 2021. According to the story, in the 18th century, the messenger who was supposed to obtain permission from the Prince Abbot of Fulda to harvest the grapes on the Johannisberg model estate (near Rüdesheim) was so late that the grapes on the vine were already rotten and shriveled. Nevertheless, the monks pressed the wine and the noble rot of the grapes is said to have given rise to the Spätlese.
