    Bonifatius, birth name Wynfreth (also Wynfrith, Winfrid, Winfried, * around 673 in Crediton; † June 5, 754 or 755 near Dokkum in Friesland), was one of the best-known Christian missionaries and the most important church reformers in the Frankish kingdom.
    He was mission archbishop, papal legate for Germania, bishop of Mainz, most recently bishop of Utrecht and founder of several monasteries, including Fulda.
    Due to his large-scale missionary work, which he carried out with Franconian support, in Germania, which was then still predominantly non-Christian, he has been honored by the Catholic Church as the "Apostle of the Germans" since the 16th century.

        Boniface, originally Winfrid, was born in the county of Wessex (England) about 673 and educated at the monasteries of Exter and Nursling. At the age of forty he traveled to Germany for the first time as a missionary.
        He made three pilgrimages to Rome to ensure the unity of the Church. In 719 he received the missionary commission for Germania and the name Bonifatius from Pope Gregory II. In 722 he was ordained missionary bishop, in 732 by Gregory III. appointed archbishop. He organized the church in Bavaria by renewing existing dioceses, in Central Germany by founding new ones (Büraburg, Erfurt, Würzburg) and reformed the Franconian church through synods. He established monasteries (Amöneburg, Fritzlar, Fulda) as centers for further missionary work, as places of prayer and culture. On June 5, 754, Boniface was killed by pagan Frisians near Dokkum and later buried in his favorite foundation, the Fulda monastery.
        St. Boniface is the patron saint of Fulda and the bishopric of Fulda.
