Shortly before Solingen lies the village of Balkhausen, idyllic and typically mountainous. Beautifully restored half-timbered houses decorate the place with colorful flowers on the windowsill. From here you reach the Balkhauser Kotten after a small piece of forest. The "little house", as it was once called in Middle Low German, today serves as Solinger Schleifermuseum. Inside the Kotten you can marvel at all sorts of historical tools and the well-known Solingen knives. Even the two wooden water wheels are still in use. Outside around the Kotten you can have a break with a view of the Wupper.

First documented in 1504, since 1612 occupied as Doppelkotten, the Balkhauser Kotten 1922 still 56 grinders offered a workshop. In 1950, the "Außenkotten" had to give way to the road construction, while the Innenkotten created a grinder museum.
