In the footsteps of the Poilus

If you are interested in history and nature, you might like to hike to the Monument des Fusillés in Nouvron-Vingré, France. This monument honors six French soldiers who were executed by their own army in 1914 for allegedly retreating during World War I, but who were later exonerated and honored as the "martyrs of Vingré." The monument is located at the edge of a field, near the road which leads to the village of Vingré. You can admire the views of the countryside and the nearby forest, as well as the obelisk and plaques that tell the story of these brave men.

If you want to discover the history and art of the First World War, you can visit the Carrières de Confrécourt, a set of underground quarries that served as a refuge for French soldiers. There you can admire the sculptures and frescoes they carved on the walls, expressing their hopes, fears and memories. You will also be able to see the ruins of the monastic farm of Confrécourt, dating from the 12th century, where violent battles took place. The quarries are open for guided tours on the first Sunday of each month, from April to September, and you must book in advance.
