The church of Selben is a small, late Gothic hall church with its ridge turret above the west gable that shapes the face of the town. The church was probably built around 1500 as a fieldstone building. A sacrament niche inside the church is also a reminder of this period. In the Baroque period around 1700, a then "modern" pulpit altar was built into the church, which has been preserved to this day. Further additions and alterations followed later in the Classicist period at the beginning of the 18th century. The organ probably dates from this period. At present, however, it presents a sad picture; some of its pipes were stolen as early as 1948. Its condition deteriorated more and more during the years of the GDR. Like many village churches, the church of Selben with its walls and furnishings tells a lot about the fate of the village. This was closely linked to the nearby open-cast lignite mine, especially in the last decades of the GDR. In the uncertainty about the continued existence of the place, the church was eventually abandoned for worship purposes and increasingly became a ruinous building, marked by vandalism.
