The city center, or Nutřkowne město in Upper Sorbian, is a district of Bautzen, consisting of the historic old town and the city center. It is the historical nucleus of the city and the center of urban commerce and cultural life, and has a population of over 5,000. Large parts of it are protected as cultural monuments. The city center includes both the historic old town within the inner city walls, with multi-story buildings predominantly dating from the 15th to 18th centuries, and the so-called inner city between the inner and outer city walls.
