Ehrenburg Castle stands in a prominent location—strategically advantageous in medieval times. Unlike many other buildings of that era, it remains in use to this day. Parts of the complex serve as a restaurant and hotel.

The Ehrenburg was first mentioned in 1161. At that time, the German Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa settled a dispute between the Archbishop of Trier and the Count Palatine near the Rhine. Exactly 170 years later, in 1331, a conflict broke out between the Archbishop of Trier and the counts on the Moselle. During the so-called “Eltz Feud,” the houses of Eltz, Ehrenberg, Schöneck and Waldeck formed an alliance against Baldwin of Trier. He archbishop ultimately won the argument. With the “Eltzer Atonement”, a peace treaty was concluded and Count Palatine Rudolf received the Ehrenburg as a fiefdom. During the War of the Palatinate Succession, French troops blew up some parts of the Ehrenburg complex in 1689. The ruins changed hands several times in the following centuries until they became private property in 1991. A year later, restoration work began and is now largely completed. Thurant Castle, with its two towers, is a unique and distinctive castle on the Moselle. One of the two towers has been restored and can be climbed. From the tower you have a wonderful view of the Moselle valley. The castle complex is definitely worth a visit and in the gastronomy you can strengthen yourself for the further way.

The gastronomy in the courtyard of the castle has a small menu, but obviously everything tastes good and the prices are reasonable.
