At the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the modern era in the 16th century, an execution site was located in the Saffig district. The gallows were visible from afar on the mountain slope leading to the towns of Saffig and Miesenheim. Even today, this area is known as "Am Galgenstück" (The Gallows Piece). According to oral tradition, many convicts were executed on Saffig Hill. According to Helmut Dörholt of Saffig, countless innocent people are also said to have lost their lives there during the Thirty Years' War. The dead were subsequently buried in the surrounding fields.
