The canal must be deep here for these cargo ships to sail through it so fully loaded. In any case, they stir up a lot of mud, because the canal behind the cargo ships is then filled with brown clouds.

It's truly impressive how precisely the cargo ship captain navigates his ship into the lock. We saw at least 10 other cargo ships on the canal that day.

The castle is almost invisible from the towpath. Good that the highlight is positioned correctly, otherwise you will definitely miss it.

5월 12, 2025, Canal du Nord

The Canal du Nord is a 95 km long canal in northern France that connects the Oise Valley to the Dunkirk-Scheldt Canal. Construction began in 1908, but was interrupted by the First World War. The canal was not completed and opened to navigation until 1965. The canal has 19 locks and two tunnels, including the Ruyaulcourt Tunnel, which spans a height difference of 40 metres. The Canal du Nord is an important waterway for inland navigation, but will be replaced in the future by the Seine-Nord Europe Canal, a more modern connection.

The Château d'Happlaincourt, a medieval castle, dates back to the 13th century and was originally a fortified building with a square plan, surrounded by water. During the First World War, the castle was largely destroyed, leaving only ruins today. Historically, it played a role in the Ligue catholique in the 16th century, when Jacques d'Humières drew up a manifesto there to restore the Catholic religion.

Crossed by the Canal du Nord, the town of Allaines boasts a rich history spanning the centuries. Gallo-Roman vases have been found in its soil, before the village became a strategic location during wars of various eras.

The listed building is striking for its original architecture with a porch tower over 34 meters high, a double transept or a radio-concentric choir. Inside, the visitor is seduced by the ancient 260 m long labyrinth engraved in the paving of the nave. Stained glass windows installed at different times complete the artistic offer of the Saint-Quentin Basilica, with in particular medieval stained glass windows in the apse chapels dating from the 12th century. These depict episodes from the life of the Virgin Mary and Saint Stephen.

This museum is located on the front lines of the Battle of the Somme. The white concrete design by architect Henri-Edouard Ciriani describes a gentle arc set into the southwest wall of the medieval castle. It forms a harmonious whole with the four large round towers, each with a diameter of 9 m. The building at the Etang du Cam stands on a series of smooth white concrete columns, creating a beautiful reflection in the water. The rooms are accessed through an opening in the wall of the 13th-century castle, which was built by the Counts of Vermandois. Charles the Bold imprisoned Louis XI in one of the towers.

The Basilique Saint-Quentin is a beautiful Gothic church in the heart of Saint-Quentin, France. Built between the 12th and 15th centuries, this basilica is dedicated to the martyr Saint Quentin. With an impressive 133 meters long and 40 meters high, it is a real eye-catcher. What makes this basilica really special are the unique architectural elements such as the tower-portico at the front, the double transept, and the choir with radiating chapels. Inside, you will also find an ancient labyrinth of 260 meters in the floor of the nave, which is a fascinating detail. The basilica has a rich history and contains the relics of Saint Quentin, who were an important object of veneration in the Middle Ages. Although the building was badly damaged during the First World War, it was reopened in 1956 after extensive restoration.

This Cistercian abbey was founded in 1132 by Bernard of Clairvaux and grew into a large and influential community within a century. Royal armies camped there as in a fortress and Charles V signed peace with Henry II in 1556. In addition to the sick and outcasts, travellers and pilgrims also found shelter in the hospital. The largest abbey church in Europe stood here with an extraordinary length of 135 metres. On feast days, 3000 meals were provided to the needy in the wide area. After the French Revolution, it was declared national property and an inglorious end followed as an open-air quarry. Now, restored parts remain, such as the abbot's palace with the dormitories and monks' halls with the chapter house next to it. The 7-hectare abbey park is being restored to its former glory. Open March to November (Tue-Sat 10am-12pm and 2pm-5.30pm, Sun 3pm-6.30pm, closed Mondays).

The Porte de Paris in Cambrai is an impressive remnant of the old city defences. Originally built to protect the southern entrance to the city, this gate dates from the end of the 14th century. The architecture of the gate is typical of the style of the time, with sturdy stone structures designed to withstand attacks. The Porte de Paris is part of what was once a four-kilometre-long city wall, reinforced by around fifty towers and seven gates. This gate is one of the few remaining parts of these defences and offers a fascinating insight into medieval military architecture.

Church built in stone in the 12th century and fortified in the 15th century. It was completely destroyed during the bombings of the First World War and then rebuilt in the early 1920s. Inside, remarkable stained glass windows and liturgical furniture made by Gérard Ansart and the Tambouret workshops in 1926-1927.

The Monument aux Morts in Péronne is a monument commemorating the victims of the First World War. The monument was designed by the architect Louis Faille and the sculptor Paul Auban. The monument is located in a public square and consists of a stone wall framing a terrace, the corners of which are occupied by planters. The monument contains a striking sculpture called “La Picarde maudissant la guerre” (The Picard who curses the war). The sculpture shows a woman on her knees, crying over the body of a dead soldier, while raising her fist in the air to curse the war. The monument was inaugurated on 20 June 1926.
