A quiet road up to Geishouse, then a cycle and footpath with fine asphalt and plenty of shade until about 1 kilometer before the Col du Grand Ballon. Praise for the planning and development of this greenway! This is what cycling tourism is all about. A few shorter sections, especially toward the end, have double-digit gradients of up to about 15%. https://www.quaeldich.de/paesse/grand-ballon/

Impressive. Easily accessible via the official circular route. On good/nice days there is quite a lot going on here

The climb via Geishouse to the Grand Ballon has been newly paved since summer 2023, making it a truly beautiful alternative to the routes where you have to share the road with motorcycles and sports cars. It's also highly recommended for scenic reasons and, as it's mostly through the forest, is relatively bearable in summer.

Recommended! The asphalt after Geishouse has recently been completely renewed and is completely car-free from there to Ferme du Haag. However, they have closed the road with a barrier that you cannot go around but only under. So you have to get off and click in again at 8%. Not very convenient and completely dangerous if you descend via that side. Hopefully they will adjust this. The climb is easy to do at the beginning with a very steep section of 10%. After Geishouse on the renewed asphalt it becomes more difficult with a few kilometers around 9%. You get a chance to catch your breath for a while and then finish with sections of 11-12% to Ferme du Haag. The last 2 km to the top of the Grand Ballon are a bit easier again but all in all it makes for a pretty tough climb.

The road from Geishouse is now a greenway reserved for bicycles! Watch out for the barrier at the bottom of Geishouse, especially on the way down!

For example, if you come from far below from Rimbach over the Fuchsfelsen, the character of the landscape up on the plateau changes dramatically: another world, wide views, flower meadows... simply fantastic. On days with good visibility, the detour to the highest point of the Rossberg is worthwhile, even if it only consists of a small group of rocks.

I'm up from Moosch on my racing bike. The asphalt is ok up to Geishouse. Then he gets worse and worse. In many places forest soil, muddy mud, loose chippings. Everything was mobile but no longer asphalted ;-)

More than 100 years ago a war raged here and there was so much suffering that a memorial was built here, which should give many a leader something to think about today.

This French observation post was restored in this place in 1985, it was then on the southern slope. It is of the "Molehill" type, model OD 92-95 in the shape of a hemisphere, with a rotating visor. After the war, these objects were incorporated into the Maginot Line or scrapped. I find it very good to incorporate such objects into this system, it takes on a different meaning in a place where it once stood more than 100 years ago than in a museum.

The Hartmannswillerkopf was bitterly contested between the Germans and the French during the First World War because of its exposed and strategically favorable location with a view of the Alsatian and Upper Rhine plains. The battle for the summit began on December 31, 1914. The heaviest fighting took place on 19/20. January 26th, March 25th and 26th April and 21./22. December 1915. During the four years of the war, the hilltop changed hands four times. From about mid-1916 both sides reduced their troops there; more intense fighting took place in the more northerly sectors of the front. From 1916 onwards there were essentially only artillery duels. Both sides limited themselves to keeping their lines. 30,000 French and German soldiers died in the entrenchment battles at Hartmannswillerkopf; about twice as many were injured. They did not lead to a result for either side and now stand for the futility of war. The Hartmannswillerkopf has occasionally been called the "mountain of death". On August 3, 2014, the 100th anniversary of Germany's declaration of war on France (World War I), Federal President Joachim Gauck and French President François Hollande met at Hartmannswillerkopf. On November 10, 2017, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and President Emmanuel Macron inaugurated a joint Franco-German museum to commemorate the battles.

It is impressive when you see the whole position and the trenches. A mountain like a Swiss cheese. The downside of the whole thing when you consider the 30000 soldiers had to lose their lives meaningless.

Attention: definitely not suitable as a departure! The road quality is too bad: Potholes and gravel make the descent very dangerous. The driveway is great if you want to give yourself the edge: hard and long, but shady and no traffic. The potholes can be well avoided during the ascent. --- Attention: Do NOT descend on this road !!! The road surface is bad. Potholes and loose gravel are dangerous on the descent. Nice for ascending if you want to get wasted: Long and steep, as compensation shady woods and emergency traffic. On the ascend the potholes are not the problem.
