The Thur on your left, the vineyard on your right. Magnificent (golden) colours of the vineyard from the end of September.

From Soultz: Very nice climb. The road surface is great, runs smoothly and you mainly drive through a shady forest with the occasional glimpse through the trees. Few cars encountered, at the end a beautiful meadow and then at the top you can continue to the Grand Ballon.

The Hartmannswillerkopf is one of the four great national monuments of the First World War. Composed of an altar, a cemetery and a crypt, it is also distinguished by its unique setting overlooking the plain of Alsace. To visit the crypt, timetables are available on the website: www.memorial-hwk.eu.

The 957 meter high Hartmannswillerkopf (French Vieil Armand, originally German Hartmannsweiler Kopf) is a hilltop in the Southern Vosges in the Haut-Rhin department in Alsace, near the towns of Hartmannsweiler and Berrweiler. The Hartmannswillerkopf was fiercely contested between the Germans and the French during the First World War because of its exposed and strategically favorable location with a view of the Alsatian and Upper Rhine plains. The struggle for the summit began on December 31, 1914. The heaviest fighting took place on December 19-20. January, March 26, 25./26. April and 21./22. December 1915. During the four years of the war, the hilltop changed hands four times. From about mid-1916 both sides reduced their troops there; more intense fighting took place in more northern sectors of the front. From 1916 there were essentially only artillery duels. Both sides were content to hold their lines. 30,000 French and German soldiers died in the skirmishes at Hartmannswillerkopf; about twice as many were injured. They did not lead to a result for either side and today they stand for the futility of the war. The Hartmannswillerkopf has occasionally been called the "mountain of death". On August 3, 2014, the 100th anniversary of Germany's declaration of war on France (World War I), Federal President Joachim Gauck and French President François Hollande met at Hartmannswillerkopf. On November 10, 2017, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and President Emmanuel Macron inaugurated a joint Franco-German museum to commemorate the fighting. Hartmannsweilerkopf in Alsace Known only to those familiar with the area and a few walkers before 1914, the Hartmannswillerkopf gained notoriety in both France and Germany as a result of the terrible fighting in 1915. In the course of the attacks and counter-attacks, the summit of the Hartmannswillerkopf was alternately under German and French rule. More than 7,000 German and French soldiers lost their lives in the trenches on this hilltop. The area is like a single graveyard. The fighting on the mountain in the Vosges was extremely hard. The strategically important position of the 956 meter high hilltop was hotly contested between December 1914 and January 1916. There was never a victor in the battle - A place to explore the full absurdity of World War I. A national memorial was also erected at Hartmannswillerkopf to commemorate the fallen soldiers, one of the four French national memorials of the First World War. The intentionally original work of the architect Robert Danis and the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle was inaugurated in 1932 by the then French President Albert Lebrun. The monument consists of two elements: an altar of the Fatherland dominating the esplanade and the military cemetery with 1,256 graves of French soldiers and 6 ossuaries, and a beautiful crypt - like an underground cathedral - into which visitors can enter through an 80-meter-long honorary trench reached.

More than 100 years ago a war raged here and there was so much suffering that a memorial was built here, which should give many a leader something to think about today.

5월 26, 2022, Climb to Col Amic
The south ascent to Col Amic cannot compete with the north ascent of Soultz in terms of the beauty of the route, but it is still highly recommended. The route is quite spacious, the incline is rather moderate, but it is a bit unrhythmic to drive. Forest passages alternate with more promising meadow slopes.
