Everything has already been said about the history of the church - there is currently construction going on around the church and the area around the church is cordoned off...

The Nikolaikirche was in the 13./14. It was built in the 18th century and until 1945 shone with, among other things, a magnificent, twisted pointed tower, a so-called Gothic pointed helmet over 100 meters high. This looks impressive on old pictures. Unfortunately, and absolutely pitiful, large parts of the church were destroyed by German grenade bombardment of the city, which was already occupied by Russia, on April 29, 1945, the last day of the war in Anklam. The spire and gable roof collapsed. In the post-war period, the ruins fell into disrepair more and more over five decades. It was not until 1995 (!!!) that the remaining building structure was secured, the nave was provided with an emergency roof. Reconstruction measures have been taking place since 2010, including restoring the roof and installing new windows, but it will be a long time before the building may shine again. It is both depressing and very vivid to look at the bare ground of the nave. Interestingly, the still standing tower body is used for tourism. For a fee of 4 euros, you can climb up to a height of 55 meters via two intermediate levels, which is rewarded with a fantastic view over the city. Especially the views to the west over the winding Peene are wonderful.

The Peene Valley - on the way from a major nature conservation project to a nature park From 1992 to 2009, one of the largest nature conservation projects in Germany was implemented in the Peene Valley. This major nature conservation project was sponsored by the “Peenetal Landscape” association, which includes the Demmin and Ostvorpommern districts, the cities of Demmin, Loitz, Jarmen, Gützkow and Anklam and the “Nature Conservation in the Peene Valley” association. The approximately 20,000 hectare core zone of the large-scale nature conservation project stretched from the north-west bank of the Kummerower See to the confluence of the Peene east of Anklam and included the entire deeply marshland valley of the Peene as well as a large part of the slopes of the Peene valley. The core zone of the project was surrounded by a so-called project zone, which was also around 20,000 hectares in size. This zone of marginal influences on the Peene Valley was included both in the maintenance and development planning of the project and in the management of measures in the core zone, but investments in the natural development were not made here. The main task of the large-scale nature conservation project was to create the natural conditions for the area-wide designation of the approximately 20,000 hectare core zone as a nature reserve. For this purpose, a total of around € 27.2 million in public funds were made available in the 17 years of the project, almost 73% of which came from federal funds and a good 19% from funds from the state M-V. Around 8% of the project funds were raised by the member municipalities of the “Peenetal-Landschaft” association, supplemented by around € 640,000 from donations from the Kurt Lange Foundation in Bielefeld. SOURCE from Mapf: https://www.anklam.de/index.php?La=1&ffsn=false&object=tx,542.908.1&sub=0 The former church, consecrated to Saint Nicholas - the patron saint of seafarers, fishermen and traders - is one of the most striking buildings in the townscape of the small Hanseatic and Lilienthal town of Anklam, along with the older St. Mary's Church. The three-aisled and seven-bay Gothic hall church, built between the 13th and 15th centuries, was known for its paintings, the 103 m high tower with twisted top and the expansive three apse choir area, which is unique in the region. Of the many extensions that the Nikolaikirche received after its completion, only the southern extensions with the two chapels, the vestibule and the sacristy are preserved today. The church, located to the north-east of the market square on Nikolaikirchstrasse, was partially destroyed in World War II and has been rebuilt in smaller and larger steps since 1994 and, after the initial security work, has been used for exhibitions and events in the summer months since 2000.
