The “village” of Dornes, in Ferreira do Zêzere, is usually called the Enchanted Peninsula or the Mythical Land of the Templars. These epithets are well-founded. The small town is located right on top of a lovely peninsula surrounded by the Zêzere River reservoir and has the famous Templar Tower of Dornes, a pentagonal defensive tower of which no other examples are known in Portugal. Beautifully embraced by the Zêzere River, Dornes is a picturesque village where time stands still. An enchanting place to discover off the beaten track, located in the north zone of Castelo de Bode dam, half an hour away from Tomar. Regarded as one of the most beautiful riverside villages in Portugal, Dornes strikes its visitors for its breath-taking beauty. The History of Dornes dates back to the foundation of Portugal, deeply related to the Order of the Knights Templar in Portugal. Nowadays Dornes is a welcoming small-scale tourism destination, ideal for cultural tours or water sports. While in Dornes, don't miss the chance to visit the pentagon-shaped Tower, allegedly built by the Knights Templar as a watchtower of the Zêzere defence line, as well as the 15th century Church of Nossa Senhora do Pranto.

It is worth going beyond the village of the Church of Ns Senhora do Pranto towards the Dornes cemetery and arriving at the tip where you can see the Zezere River on both sides. The tip of the Dornes Peninsula, a fjord if you will.

Very nice descent of this small stream, waterfall after waterfall, a real pleasure but be careful it is quite slippery in places.

It's not as easy as you might think. With the rain, you risk slipping and breaking your face. Don't hesitate to start your "live tracking", it could be useful especially if you walk alone....

The river beach Praia Fluvial do Penedo Furado has a lot to offer: a large, shady natural swimming pool, beautiful boardwalks, mysterious fossils, spectacular waterfalls and small ponds connected by streams. There is a larger cafe, a picnic area with BBQ ovens and restrooms. A little more time should be planned for the short hike along the Passadiço. There is too much to see and it's always uphill and downhill.
