Beautiful both inside and out. A must-visit if you're in the area. The hike up the mountain is a bit strenuous, so it's better to go by car or bus. Parking is free.

Bridge over the Lima

From the bridge, you have a good view of the Lima River and the city of Viana. However, the pedestrian lane (only the one downstream is open) is very narrow and not really designed for two-way traffic. The linguistic proximity of the "Puente Eiffel" here in Portugal and the Eifel mountain range in western Germany is no coincidence: The family of the designer – whose world-famous "Twilight of Paris" (named after its builder) is probably familiar to everyone – has German roots. The ancestors of the Eiffel Tower and bridge builder Gustave EIFFEL come from the Eifel town of Marmagen (in the Euskirchen district, North Rhine-Westphalia). Metal bridge from the school of Gustave Eiffel, inaugurated in 1878. With its 562 m length, it spans the mouth of the Lima River and connects Darque and Viana do Castelo with pedestrian and car traffic on the upper bridge deck and train traffic on the lower bridge deck.

The monastery, founded around 1087 by the Benedictine order, was reorganized in the second half of the 17th century.
