This place of worship looks rather dilapidated and shabby: it is not a place where the Van Harens would proudly take their family and elite friends. It is true that Rembrandt and Saskia had married in that church, but few people know that. The Van Harens register as members in this church building and regularly participate in the sacrament. However, the view of a tower with an onion and a church with a transept is not very uplifting in their eyes. Van Haren talks about it with tenants and landowners and the decision is made: a new church should be built in the same place: centrally in the village. But who pays for that? Van Haren knows the way to big money: the Provincial Executive donates 11,500 caroliguldens, the landowners more than 5,600 and with a loan of 1,400 guilders, Van Haren manages to make ends meet. For more than 17,500, a beautiful, octagonal church, a showpiece of the village, is being built right in front of his front door. To the greater glory of the Van Harens in particular.

Saskia van Uylenburgh was the wife of the painter Rembrandt van Rijn and was the model for a number of his important works. Saskia and Rembrandt married in 1634 in the church of Sint Annaparochie.
