The former convent of the sisters Jesus, Mary and Joseph was designed in 1898 by the Tilburg architect Henri van den Abeelen. The church council of the H.H. Ewaldenkerk gave the order for this. The education of Catholic girls was the main priority. With "De Tobacco Cutter" they wanted to keep the memory of the past alive. For example, the tobacco cutter in the artwork is on an auction box, because a chair used to be too expensive. There used to be a striking lime tree at the location, which unfortunately had to be cut down due to illness. The artist Humphrey Dirks is a bronze caster in Druten. He is the creator of several works of art, including the sculpture "Handje Klap" on the Hogestraat as a reminder of the Drutense Leste Mert. Mini-replicas of "De Tobacco Cutter" can be found in many living rooms of the Land van Maas en Waal.
