A picturesque church in a beautiful location!

The Jewish communities in Europe, whose centuries-old tradition is often only visible to the public through commemorative plaques or monuments, were honored - especially in these difficult times for them with a rapidly growing, openly expressed anti-Semitism - by awarding the "International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen" to the President of the Conference of European Rabbis, Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, and the Jewish communities in Europe. "In recognition of his outstanding work for peace, the self-determination of peoples and European values, for tolerance, pluralism and understanding, and in recognition of his significant commitment to interreligious and intercultural dialogue, the Board of Directors of the Society for the Award of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen in 2024 honors the President of the Conference of European Rabbis, Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, and together with him the Jewish communities in Europe. With this award, the Charlemagne Prize Directorate wants to send a signal that Jewish life is a natural part of Europe and that there can be no place for anti-Semitism in Europe. In Uitwierde there is a church hall and tower, both of which you can view. I think it's great that the Groninger Churches Foundation opens the churches to visitors. During the siege of Delfzijl, the original church building suffered significant damage by the plundering French troops. It was replaced in 1839 by the current church hall, which is separate from the tower. There is a Van Dam organ in the church. The tower is a beautiful vantage point. Inside, a special staircase was built by Groningen architect Onix. Really surprisingly done! An experience! The path in the Uitwierde tower won a Dutch Design Award in 2013. The bells of the tower all showed a different time. There used to be a moat around the church and tower, now there is a walking path.

Meandering along the canal and past hamlets and beautiful villages

The three hanging kitchens are the landmark of Appingedam. Due to a lack of space, the kitchens were built beyond the Damsterdiep sluice. A really nice photo motif with a unique story. You have the most beautiful view from the bridge on the Kniestraat.

On this car-free road you wind along the Damsterdiep through small villages. The perfect connection between Groningen and Appingedam.
