The keep of Ewsum The round gun tower of Ewsum Castle near Middelstum was built in 1472 by knight Onno van Ewsum. With its thick walls and loopholes, it offered protection during a time of war and the rise of firearms. This is the most important remaining example of the once impressive castle; the rest was demolished in the 19th century. Today, the tower is part of the historic castle grounds, along with gardens and heritage belonging to Het Groninger Landschap (The Groningen Landscape).

During the municipal reorganization of 1990, Loppersum was an independent municipality, which was expanded with the municipalities of Middelstum, Stedum and 't Zandt. This merger did not go smoothly. At the time, it was mainly residents of Middelstum who did not see anything in it at all and preferred to look in the direction of Hefshuizen. The discussion about housing for the civil servants continued for years, the municipality remained housed at four different locations in Loppersum and Middelstum all that time. Finally, in April 2004, the municipal council agreed to the construction of this town hall on the Molenweg in Loppersum. The new building was put into use on October 1, 2007. The municipality of Eemsdelta was created on January 1, 2021 after a merger of the municipalities of Appingedam, Delfzijl and Loppersum.

The tearoom is open from Tuesday to Friday from 11am to 5pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 1pm to 5pm

Here you will find a historical vegetable garden, a herb garden that is mainly used by the tearoom on the manor, an orchard, a flower garden and a sunny fruit wall. All designed according to the principles of gardening in the year 1800.
