The Albatros building used to be a church. Now it is the base of https://www.albatros-koor.nl/. This choir originated from the Albatros cigar factory. The church is now a wedding location and is used for music performances. http://www.sccpekela.nl/

Ubbo Wilkens was mayor of Veendam from 1907-1910 and from 1920 until his death in 1921. From 1910-1920 he was deputy of the province of Groningen. At his death he left the municipality a bequest of 3000 guilders for the construction of the fountain. It was not until 1934 that the fountain was put into use. The fountain commemorates the connection of Veendam to the water supply network. Something that Ubbo Wilkens, who was mayor at the time, valued greatly. The Ubbo Wilkensfontein is a design by the Amsterdammer C.L van Huguenoth-Van de Linden and was executed by the sculptor G. Marree from Amsterdam.
