In the Maasduinen region, you'll find a whole host of fens. But they don't all have the same history and characteristics. The Esven is one of the moderately nutrient-poor fens. And when I visited, it wasn't moderately dry, but almost completely dry, except for a small puddle. As you can read in the other comments, this happens quite often. And other times, it's overflowing. "Angels' Quarry" or "Guardian Angels" would also be a good name

The most worn-out information board along the road to the fortress 't Genneperhuis indicates just one of the most important points: the ravelin. Fortunately, you can also see some stone benches here and there are bridges and canals. You can also see those bridges and canals on the other side of the ravelin (near the tea house). So what is that ravelin? It is the entire fortified island that runs from here to almost the tea house and all the way to the mouth of the Niers that had to serve as a defense post on the outside of the fortress itself. You can picture it with a bit of imagination. And those concrete benches that are around you here symbolize the fortress walls that used to be on the ravelin. Can you picture it? Otherwise, feel free to take another look at the illustrations on other boards. From here you can now go to the ruins of the castle via the cycle and walking path (you will also come across a sign about the viewing platform) or you can walk along the canal over the path in the grass to the Maaskant to enter the gate from there that takes you to the viewing platform but also lets you look at the ruins of the last version of the destroyed castle. You can see them now when you are standing in front of the information board. Welcome to the island around the core of the Genneperhuis.

Here, the Niers flows into the Meuse. A very beautiful, renaturalized landscape, but the actual Niers estuary is not visible from the main path.
