Former St. Elizabeth's Monastery. Description: two perpendicular wings (eighteenth century), but significantly modernized. Wide facade with anchor date 1778 and a round-arched gate in a blocky rectangular bluestone frame; windows in segmental arched bluestone frames. In the garden, a fragment with an octagonal turret, capped by a trimmed spire, with old fragments (fifteenth century). Near the complex is a so-called "plague house" made of brick. In 1240, Dirk van Altena founded a Caulier monastery here. In 1435, the monastery passed to the Congregation of Windesheim. After its destruction in 1578, reconstruction began in 1603. The two existing perpendicular wings were built against the wing from 1656, destroyed in 1944. Of the monastery chapel, demolished in 1801, only the octagonal stair tower remains. At its foot, a small chapel was built using classicist pilasters, prongs, and a shell-shaped pediment (mid-17th century). The monastery was used for a time as a holiday and nursing home for the Little Sisters of St. Joseph, but is now part of the Land van Horne Foundation. I wouldn't have visited the tower if it weren't for the remarkable person who built it and his remarkable life story, in which he was fascinated by the theory of evolution and succeeded in finding the missing link between man and ape. A fascinating man, a fascinating place, a truly fascinating structure, and a beautiful woodland setting. Ample parking and a starting point for walks that immediately take you to the Busjop burial grounds and the heathlands. More than just a café, it's also a well-known restaurant.

It's called Boscafé De Busjop, but don't be fooled: it's also a well-known and award-winning spot in the region, boasting not only a lovely café terrace and playground, but also a pretty good kitchen. A bistro/restaurant, in other words.

3,000 years ago, the ashes of the dead were buried after cremation at the Busjop Burial Field. The ashes were then placed in an urn or cloth, and the whole area was covered with a low mound of sods. Each individual received his or her own burial monument. By repeatedly creating a new mound near another, a vast burial or urn field was created. Over the course of five centuries, a "death landscape" of more than fifty burial mounds developed here. In 1951, the burial field was partially investigated, after which the urns and cremated remains ended up in the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden. Due to the growth of trees and brambles, the mounds disappeared from view for a long time and fell into oblivion. In 2010-2011, the Dutch Forestry Commission, in collaboration with the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands, cleared the forest, creating an open landscape. This year the view of the fields was taken up by a sea of mature corn plants.

The Kloosterhof bakery, now owned by the Dutch Forestry Commission, is open a few days a year. Bread is baked there, which you can then enjoy with homemade jam while listening to stories about the bakery and its history. Additional information is provided on the sign. There are several benches. These days, anyone who wishes to contribute is asked to help preserve this heritage site.
