A century ago, there were about 15 brick factories in Rijssen, of which four remained in the sixties. From the beginning of the 20th century until 1964, these had a narrow-gauge railway to transport clay from the quarry to the factories.

Striking Markelo appearance

From the origin of the core of Markelo in the Middle Ages until around 1620, there was a Maria chapel on the hill with a miraculous statue where the mother of Jesus was called upon under the name of Our Lady of Help. The chapel and the hill had an important function in the administration of justice. Moreover, historians suspect that a pilgrimage took place to the statue of Mary.

In Rijssen, at the foot of the Rijsserberg, there is a narrow-gauge railway track where brick factories transported their raw materials about 100 years ago. You can visit this track and take a ride on it with various types of narrow-gauge equipment.
