Shell lime kilns were in operation here from the 17th century until 1990. A friendly member of the historical society explains the work processes over time very vividly using PowerPoint presentations and historical videos (and from his own family history).

Just outside Hasselt lies an outdated Hooibergenterrein. On the north side of the city, between Stadswegsloot and De Weede, a place where city farmers used to store their hay.

The Zwarte Water river starts in Zwolle and flows over 19 kilometers to the Zwarte Meer. Fun fact about the name: the name probably has nothing to do with the color black, but probably comes from the word 'zwet', which means border. In the Middle Ages, the river played a major role in the development of Zwolle as a Hanseatic city. The river was an important transport route to the sea and to other Hanseatic cities.

The stone dike wall was previously maintained by the adjacent farmers. Everyone was obliged to keep his own part in good condition. The dike was recently reinforced with steel plates (dam plates) that were pressed into the ground electrically (!) and without much vibration. They are now no longer visible. The top of the dike used to be slightly lower. Due to better drainage, the water has not risen higher than one meter from the bottom of the wall for many years. My photos were taken after a lot of rainfall in recent weeks: the water sometimes just reaches the foot. The Steenen Dijk is a monument and quite unique in the Netherlands.

The Stenendijk runs southeast of Hasselt along the Galgenrak, a tributary of Zwarte Water, to the Streukelerzijl pumping station. The total length is over 1 kilometer.
