Dogs are allowed off-leash in various parts of this forest. Keep this in mind if you don't like dogs or are afraid of them. The forest isn't flat, but undulating, with some really steep climbs here and there. Near Elst and Amerongen, you'll find ancient burial mounds – prehistoric mounds from the Bronze Age are scattered throughout the forest. According to official sighting lists, there have been several reports of wolves sighted in the Utrechtse Heuvelrug in recent months. Runners spotted two wolves in this area in February. The animals weren't looking for a confrontation. A forest to enjoy

In the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries Amerongen flourished as a centre for tobacco cultivation. The poor soils were treated annually with sheep and pigeon manure; with nutrient-ripe slip from the river and with manure from South America, which was brought in by ship. The skilled tobacco farmers let the seeds germinate early in hotbeds, better known as the "Dutch method". It was a lucrative trade.

The Andries Church (formerly St. Andries Church) is a late Gothic church in Amerongen, in the Dutch province of Province.
