On the southern edge of Zuid-Beveland, near Baarland, a new nature reserve was created in 2007. This was done to compensate for the nature that is being lost due to the deepening of the Western Scheldt. The deepening increases the current and the nature outside the dike on the Western Scheldt is crumbling. The two most important goals in the creation of this area were to provide a high-water refuge for wading birds and a breeding area for coastal breeding birds. The area is used extensively by coastal breeding birds. Birds such as ringed plovers, ringed plovers and avocets are extensively searching for worms, crustaceans and cockles. In the spring of 2009, the nests were counted and it turned out that more than 110 pairs of avocets were breeding. The young are currently leaving the nest. Wherever you look, you can see this beautiful creature wading through the area. The ranger also counted a small colony of breeding black-headed gulls, a few Kentish plovers, a few little ringed plovers and three pairs of ringed plovers. You can take a look at this nursery. The area is right next to the Scheldeoord campsite in the south of Baarland. You can look out over the area from the Zeedijk. This area falls under Natura 2000

Once the protector of the harbor, then an oyster farm, a lobster park, and built up with industry. Now the canals, ramparts, and inner courtyard have been restored to their former state. But so much has happened at this extensive bulwark as a vital point in the defense of the fortified city of Bergen op Zoom. William of Orange approved the design of this large fort in 1584. Many sieges followed, which the fort withstood. However, it lost its function as a defensive work, but what remains is the interesting history of the Waterschans.

The Waterschans is the oldest fortification in Bergen op Zoom and has recently been restored. The area has been reconstructed in recent years according to drawings found from around 1880. Experience the history of the extensive stronghold, surrounded by the water of the Scheldt. From the 16th century onwards, the Waterschans protected safe access to the city for several centuries. The buildings with stone buildings were like a small village for the soldiers. After its function as a military fortified city was abolished, the canals, which were clean due to the ebb and flow of the tide, were used as breeding ponds for fishing. Later still, the entire area in and around the fort was filled with factory halls. This involves often polluting industries such as an iron foundry, asphalt factory and oil tanks. The fort has now been restored to its former glory and forms a beautiful nature reserve for recreation.

The Zwaluwmeer is one of the striking features of the Kalmthoutse Heide Border Park. It is a large fen in the nature reserve, along heathlands and forests. This lake was created as a result of previous peat mining in the area. The Zwaluwmeer is an important part of the natural environment in the park and provides a habitat for various plant and animal species. The lake itself is submerged by reeds and aquatic plants, making it an attractive place for waterfowl, such as ducks, grebes and sometimes even rarer species. It is also a great location for birdwatchers to observe birds, especially during the migration seasons when migratory birds visit the area. Zwaluwmeer is often a peaceful and quiet place, ideal for nature lovers who want to enjoy the serene environment and the beauty of nature. It is a great place to walk, take photographs and relax while enjoying the serene nature in the Kalmthoutse Heide Border Park. #WandelTotaal
