In 1971, the Grevelingenmeer with a surface area of 14,000 hectares was created by damming. In the past, the Grevelingen was mainly important for oyster and mussel farming. Now this salty lake is an attractive area for water sports. In addition, nature receives a lot of attention. For the benefit of pleasure craft, the Mosselbank has been located on the plate directly in front of the water sports island since 1990. On the other side is Herkingen on the former island of Goeree-Overflakkee. In your field of vision on the right you can see the Grevelingendam. It is one of the most important connections between Schouwen-Duiveland and the mainland. As part of the Delta Plan, this dam was built between Bruinisse and Goeree-Overflakkee in 1961-1965. The northern channel, the Bocht van Sint Jacob, was closed off by dumping a dam of stones using a cable car. On 1 April 1965, the Grevelingendam was opened to traffic.

Once the protector of the harbor, then an oyster farm, a lobster park, and built up with industry. Now the canals, ramparts, and inner courtyard have been restored to their former state. But so much has happened at this extensive bulwark as a vital point in the defense of the fortified city of Bergen op Zoom. William of Orange approved the design of this large fort in 1584. Many sieges followed, which the fort withstood. However, it lost its function as a defensive work, but what remains is the interesting history of the Waterschans.

The Waterschans is the oldest fortification in Bergen op Zoom and has recently been restored. The area has been reconstructed in recent years according to drawings found from around 1880. Experience the history of the extensive stronghold, surrounded by the water of the Scheldt. From the 16th century onwards, the Waterschans protected safe access to the city for several centuries. The buildings with stone buildings were like a small village for the soldiers. After its function as a military fortified city was abolished, the canals, which were clean due to the ebb and flow of the tide, were used as breeding ponds for fishing. Later still, the entire area in and around the fort was filled with factory halls. This involves often polluting industries such as an iron foundry, asphalt factory and oil tanks. The fort has now been restored to its former glory and forms a beautiful nature reserve for recreation.

We love this bike route. From Scharendijke across the island to the south. Then along the Oosterschelde over dykes and directly past the water. Sometimes you share the path with sheep and cows. Then stroll in Zierikzee and across the island back to Scharendijke. A total of about 40 km. When the sun is shining, the water is wonderfully blue and you can hear it rushing next to you all the time.

Here you look at a historical location. Historical interpretation: Zierikzee was besieged by the Spaniards in the 16th century, during the 80 years war. To make it more difficult for the Spaniards to conquer the city, Rev. Gerardus van Culemburgh set out with his consistory and a group of sailors and soldiers on October 3, 1575 to pierce the seawall at Borrendamme, south of Zierikzee. The Spanish general Cristóbal de Mondragón tried to close the gap, but the dike broke and almost the whole of Schouwen was flooded. Zierikzee held out, although the population was severely affected by famine during the siege. When the Spaniards left the city in November 1576, the damage was enormous. Schouwen was under water and almost all residents on Duiveland had fled. Many houses and barns were destroyed or used as firewood. The recovery took many years and cost a fortune. First of all, the repair of the dikes was started, the sea water even threatened the city walls. After the repair of the dikes, the Kaaskenswater and the nearby Ronde Weel remained. In most places the Kaaskenswater is one to three meters deep, but at 'De Schouwsedijk' it can be up to five meters deep. Trout and eel swim in the water. The salt content is 3000 mg/l in winter and more than 9000 mg/l in summer. This is much too salty for freshwater fish. In the past people have tried to turn it off there, but that was never successful. The Kaaskenswater is a popular place among fishermen who fish for saltwater fish.
