The Gouwesluis Lift Bridge in Alphen aan den Rijn is a steel lift bridge dating from 1938 over the Gouwe River and a key part of the waterway between Alphen and Gouda. The bridge is a national monument and can be raised to approximately 35 meters to allow tall ships to pass. Along with similar bridges in Boskoop and Waddinxveen, it forms a characteristic feature of the region.

The Nieuwerbrug drawbridge, also known as the toll bridge, is the only remaining private toll bridge in Western Europe and is located in Nieuwerbrug.

Along the route, you'll encounter a wide variety of polder windmills. These windmills were designed to pump water from low-lying areas and thus keep the land dry. The vast majority of the mills around the Kagerplassen lakes are characteristic hollow post mills with a cube-shaped upper house.
