The Spui is remarkable as a waterway because the direction of the river's flow has been reversed. This is a result of the Delta Works (a large-scale project at the end of the 20th century to control water management in the southwest of the Netherlands): to counteract the salinization of the Nieuwe Waterweg, the water from the Haringvliet (formerly a sea arm) no longer flows directly to the sea, but flows through the Spui to the Oude Maas,

The polder was later named after Reijnier van der Wolff. In the seventeenth century, he raised the summer dike to a winter dike.[5] In the eighteenth century, the designation was still “Putsche Kerckhof” and the ownership of the heirs of de Wolff had since been transferred to Willem Paats
