The Spui is remarkable as a waterway because the direction of the river's flow has been reversed. This is a result of the Delta Works (a large-scale project at the end of the 20th century to control water management in the southwest of the Netherlands): to counteract the salinization of the Nieuwe Waterweg, the water from the Haringvliet (formerly a sea arm) no longer flows directly to the sea, but flows through the Spui to the Oude Maas,
