🛥 Route & General Experience • The tour usually departs from Zierikzee or Sint-Annaland, but departure from Nes on Ameland is often offered – for example, with the MS Zeehond. • The destination is the Oosterschelde, a protected area with numerous sandbanks where seals settle to rest. • The round trip usually lasts 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on the tide, weather, and the chosen route.

Well, it may be a geographical spot, but the industrial area and the mediocre road surfaces don't make it particularly attractive. A little further on, past the golf course on the dike, the charm of Zeeland begins 😎

Zierikzee is a beautiful place for strolling and enjoying a coffee. It's worth checking out the old boats, the boat museum, and the shopping street, and perhaps even buying something. The various city gates and lovingly restored houses are well worth seeing.

Korenbloem (pronounced De Korenblum, English The Cornflower) is a grain mill at Molendijk 1 in Kortgene, a town in the Dutch province of Zeeland. The stone windmill is a round gallery mill with 5 levels: grain storage, flour, stone, chute and cap floor. The gallery (the balcony surrounding the mill) is 6.28m high. The mill was built in 1873 to replace a burnt-down octagonal ground sail and milled using wind power until 1953. In 1972 the blades were removed and in 1977 the cap after attempts to have the mill restored had failed. The wooden cap was covered with roofing felt. Since 2003 De Korenbloem has had new owners who have drawn up a comprehensive plan to restore the mill. In 2009, the mill was transferred to the Stichting Molen De Korenbloem (Cornflower Mill Foundation). The official opening took place on 1 October 2011, when the windmill parking brake (the so-called catch) was activated.

Since we only briefly visited Zierikzee with the 🚴♂️🚴♀️ two years ago, we took the time today for a thorough tour. And it was really worth it. It really is a pearl among the 🇳🇱 cities.

The border between Zeeland and Brabant runs on the water. The bridge spans the Scheldt-Rhine canal and is a steel arch bridge with abutments on both sides. Partially new road surface, it rolls absolutely great. Interesting facts about the dam: The Philipsdam is part of the Delta Works. It separates the Krammer and Volkerak waterways from the Oosterschelde and runs between the Grevelingendam and the Sint-Philipsland. In 1976, construction began on a work island on the Plaat van Vliet. After that, the Krammer locks were built for inland shipping. These were completed in 1983 and opened to traffic on February 2, 1987, after the dyke construction work was completed. In 1994, another lock was built for recreational shipping. The locks work with a water exchange system that prevents salt water from the Oosterschelde from flowing into the Volkerak. The heavier salt water is sucked out from below or the fresh water from above, depending on the direction the ships are traveling. The locks are 280 meters long and 24 meters wide and are therefore also suitable for large push barges. Source and more: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philipsdam

I am not very fond of this part, but it is our way to the beautiful Island of Schouwen Duiveland. The road is also nice but often busy with cars. And pay special attention to the stationary cars on the side of the road, as children can suddenly come out from between them and sit with their mother along the water. The downside is that in the winter when it is calm and you have a tailwind, you can go very fast here.
